Review : Pora Pove – Lacks stamina

There is abundant talent in new gen directors. They can think ‘out of box’. They can attract with gimmicks. But these talents are confining too few areas only. They are able to design the scene in a fresh style, but failing to strengthen with robust story line. This is making the hard cooked dish tasteless and without customers to relish. They remind many similar stories of past movies. Movie Lovers keep their hopes alive till ‘popcorn and soft drink break’. Later they are compelled to search for EXIT boards lit in red. Pora Pove also belongs to this category.
Storyline :
Vikas (Kiran) and Chaitanya (Soumya) are engineering students who for the first time came to a co-education college. Vikas is less educated in feminine gender. As usual college gives the opportunity for youngsters to spread up their clipped wings. Boys and girls tend to attract each other pretty fast. Same way Vikas and Chaitanya too get closer. As their bondage strengthens, Chaitanya gets to know a fact about Vikas that till date he loved two girls. She quits in despair that on rejection of the former two she is being roped in. Whom has Vikas loved? Did Vikas and Chaitanya meet again? Or by saying ‘Pora-pove’ did they separate for ever? Answer to these questions is the movie.
Plus Points:-
Even though the story is simple and cliched, the director managed to entertain the audience to an extent. Some college teasing and romantic scenes between the lead pair have been executed well.
Music of the film is quite good, and is a huge bonus for the movie. Soumya Sukumar performs to the best of her capabilities. First half has quite a few funny scenes, and the second half goes on an emotional note.
Yet another saving grace of the movie, is that there are no major padding artists who come in separate tracks and irritate the audience. Roles done by comedy show Jabardasth stars bring in few laughs.
Minus Points:-
Story of the film in quite old, and has nothing new to offer. Even the twists and turns are quite predictable, and one can easily know as to what will happen in the next scene.
Hero of the film is quite a let down. For a story which is centered on him, and three girls whom he woos, the makers could have opted for a better actor. Even though new comer Karan acts quite OK, he needs to improve on his look and screen presence quite rigorously.
There is absolutely no chemistry between the lead pair in the film. Even though they are in love from the first half, that does not come across on screen any where in the film. Story of the film takes shape only during the second half just before the pre-climax.

Making :
It’s a routine college love story. No specialty in story. Attraction, separation, re-union has been the theme in thousands of films. Director didn’t give any place for melodrama. Just gathered bits and pieces of college scenes, satires, songs, minute emotions and tried to kill the time. Routine scenes have been taken a bit carefully. Only the attraction between genders has been highlighted. Pora Pove is full of all the routine bits found in any college love story. Nothing more creative. But vulgar dialogues have been kept in control. Team needs to be applauded for this precaution. Story was managed till interval not to slog. Later Director couldn’t decide what to do. His stamina is over by the interval time. Then starts fumes from the seats of the audience. This happens when the storyline is weak. We can make audience pop up till interval. Story revolves at a single place after break-up of hero and heroine. This deteriorates all the interest levels drastically. Adding to this there is no entertainment to pass some time.
Cast and Technical :
Kiran’s first film. By looks he is OK but lagged in acting. Simple scenes seem to be a burden for him. Soumya is just OK. Her acting is just normal. Soumya reminds of yesteryears Savitri.
Technically the move is too good. Camera work is applaudable. Story has been painted very colorfully. Music is enjoyable. Youth will love these areas. No doubt Director has talent, but he is not lucky to get a good story to prove. This debut director clarifies that he cannot manage this normal story line any further.
